The expressions, “Spirit of God,” “Spirit of the Lord,” “Holy Spirit,” “My Spirit,” are of frequent occurrence, both in the Law and the Prophets, and are especially found in those passages which constitute the warrant for the hope of Israel. The first question which naturally occurs, with respect to the expression “Spirit of God” is – What does it mean? Does it stand for one of God’s works? is the Spirit of God a mere influence of the Divine will, an effect produced by the exertion of the Divine power? or, has it a real substantive existence?
